Fat be gone! Everything you need to know about Traditional Liposuction
Millions of men and women struggle with the insecurities and negative attention that are often associated with unsightly excess fat. If you’re looking for a surefire way to get rid of stubborn pockets of removed fat for good then you may be a good candidate for a liposuction procedure. Dr. Melanie Carreon with LCS Medical Spa in Seguin, Texas, is a board-certified medical doctor who has been performing liposuction for over 13 years with over 3,000 surgeries performed. She has used liposuction procedures to change the lives of thousands of patients, restoring their confidence and security in their bodies. If you’re looking for a way to improve the shape and contour of your body liposuction may be right for you.
What is liposuction?
Liposuction is one of the most popular cosmetic surgery methods used to help contour the body and remove localized areas of fat. If you have stubborn pockets of fat you just can’t shed and want to take your figure to the next level, liposuction can offer dramatic results. Liposuction can be performed to slim and reshape the abdomen, flanks, hips, lower back, thighs, and several other areas with results and controlled fat removal.
How does it work?
Liposuction is considered a cosmetic surgery procedure. Patients throughout Austin, San Antonio, Houston, New Braunfels, and Seguin come to LCS Medical Spa to have this popular treatment, in part, because of Dr. Carreon’s skill and years of experience. Liposuction is performed as an outpatient procedure under local anesthesia in our AAAHC Accredited Outpatient Surgical Facility. A small incision is made in the area that is desired for fat reduction so that a fat suctioning device (called a cannula) can be inserted. The cannula moves gently back and forth, which helps loosen the excess fat. The fat is then suctioned out of the body using a power-assisted liposuction device and vacuum. Once the desired amount of fat has been removed, the incision is then closed. Depending on the number and size of areas treated, liposuction can take anywhere from 2-4 hours.
Am I a good candidate?
A good candidate for liposuction is someone who maintains a healthy weight and has realistic expectations regarding the outcome of the procedure. Liposuction works best for those that are dealing with stubborn fat that has not responded well to diet and exercise alone. This procedure is great for contouring multiple problem areas and results provide a noticeably slimmer and more contoured body. Some of the most commonly treated areas on the lower half of the body includes the waist and abdomen, hips, thighs, and buttocks. The arms, neck, cheeks, and jowls are also common problem areas that respond well to liposuction.
What if I have Cellulite?
Liposuction reduces the amount of fat you carry in a certain body part. While the procedure creates a slimmer contour, it does not address other issues such as cellulite. It can help smooth the appearance of the skin in some cases, but if you have severe cellulite, then an alternate cosmetic treatment may be an option to help with this.
What about loose skin?
If you have loose skin, this will be addressed during the consultation. Surgical liposuction only addresses fat in the body, it does not tighten or improve loose or sagging skin. Because of this, Dr. Carreon may suggest liposuction and another treatment such as ultherapy for face and neck, and other non-invasive skin tightening device. If you have multiple concerns such as excess fat, cellulite, and loose skin, Dr. Carreon will discuss all of the options with you and create a comprehensive treatment plan to possibly help improve each problem area.
What if I am overweight?
Liposuction is not an effective treatment for obesity or for those looking for a way to lose weight. It is important for patients to be at a healthy weight or close to, and already have a healthy diet and exercise routine in place. Liposuction can help slim down and contour those areas that give you the most frustration, but it is not a treatment for weight loss. With that said, patients can most definitely shed the fat not pounds to help reach their optimal goals with liposuction surgery.
What’s recovery like?
Patients will have some swelling and bruising immediately following the procedure. This is normal and typically resolves within 7-10 days. Small scarring from the incisions can be expected and will fade with time. You will be given a compression garment to wear following the surgery. This will help to reduce swelling and aid in recovery. Patients typically return to work within a few days following the procedure and return to some normal activities.
Will my results last?
Liposuction offers good outcomes, however, to maintain these results, it is best to stay within a similar weight post-surgery. Even though a good amount of fat cells are removed with liposuction, other fat cells can form and enlarge if weight gain occurs. In addition, pregnancy and others after liposuction can also impact your results.
