Liposuction vs. SmartLipo -- What is right for me?
So you’ve made the exciting decision to get rid of that stubborn fat once and for all, but don’t know which procedure is right for you? Dr. Melanie Carreon with LCS Medical Spa in Seguin, Texas, performs numerous liposuction technique procedures, including minimally invasive liposuction surgery under local anesthesia also called Tumescent Liposuction and the SmartLipo laser system. Each procedure targets and removes unwanted fat for a slimmer and more defined contour. Here, she shares the pros and cons of each treatment to help men and women throughout San Marcos, New Braunfels, San Antonio, Austin, and Houston understand and determine which procedure may work best.
Liposuction is considered a cosmetic surgery that is used to help contour the body and remove localized areas of fat. The procedure involves making a small incision into the skin and then a small tool, called a cannula, is inserted to loosen and suction out the fat deposits. Once the desired amount of fat has been removed from the body, the incisions are then closed.
SmartLipo is an FDA approved, minimally invasive procedure that uses a laser to strategically diminish and melt fat that Dr. Carreon has been using for over 11 years. The triple-wave laser delivers thermal energy directly to the fat cells and targets and shrinks the cells so they’re easier to suction out of the body. Incisions are also made with this treatment, but they are smaller in size compared to traditional liposuction.
What are the main benefits between the two?
While both treatments have their advantages, one of the key differences is that patients seeking more fat removal may be better candidates for liposuction combined with SmartLipo. Tumescent liposuction is a tried and true method of fat removal that has been around for many years and provides excellent results. SmartLipo uses a laser to melt the fat away and uses laser heat to also stimulate collagen which is an added bonus for patients seeking tighter, firmer skin in some cases. This is something that traditional liposuction cannot offer so patients undergoing traditional surgery should have good skin tone and laxity.
Both liposuction and SmartLipo are performed and combined as outpatient procedures. In most cases, SmartLipo is performed using a local anesthesia, which allows patients to be comfortable during their appointment. During traditional liposuction, general anesthesia may be used depending on how much fat removal is desired, unlike Tumescent Liposuction.
Breaking down the differences:
Whether you have larger amounts of fat to remove and are ready for cosmetic surgery or have isolated areas that need toning, both Liposuction and SmartLipo have their own unique differences.
? Minimally-invasive laser lipo
? Uses local anesthesia
? Expect minimal bruising
? Requires a smaller incision than liposuction
? Little downtime (2 - 4 days)
? Recommended for patients seeking minimal fat removal and moderate skin tightening
? Cosmetic surgery treatment
? Uses IV sedation or general anesthesia
? Expect moderate to significant bruising
? Usually requires larger incisions than SmartLipo
? Has a longer recovery time (several weeks)
? Reserved for patients seeking more fat removal who have good skin tone
The end result of both of these treatments is that unwanted fat is removed from the body and you’re left with a slimmer, more proportionate contour.
Am I a good candidate?
Both of these procedures require candidates to be in good health and have realistic expectations from the procedure. Traditional Liposuction and SmartLipo are not for people who are obese or attempting to lose weight. These procedures work best for people who are dealing with excess fat that has been difficult to lose or eliminate with traditional methods. SmartLipo and traditional liposuction are not recommended to treat or remove loose or sagging skin. If you’re a smoker or not within your ideal weight then you may not be a good candidate for this procedure. Any questions pertaining to your current medications or medical history can be reviewed with Dr. Carreon during your initial assessment.
Regardless of which procedure you choose to move forward with, you’ll be thrilled with your decision and your body’s new shape. It’s important to maintain a good diet and consistent exercise routine once you’ve healed from the surgery in order to maintain results.
How important is practitioner skill?
Liposuction treatments require a skilled and experienced doctor so that an even result can be achieved that is smooth and consistent. If traditional liposuction is performed too aggressively and too much fat or not enough fat is removed, it can lead to an undesirable outcome. Laser lipo also requires a unique skill set for the same reasons. Dr. Melanie Carreon founded LCS Medical Spa, and is a board-certified medical doctor who has been performing liposuction for over 13 years. She has performed over 3,000 liposuction combined with SmartLipo, and offers patients slimming, beautiful results that look and feel healthy and natural, experience matters!
