About IPL

If you struggle with how your facial skin looks because of dark spots, sun damage, or fine lines, LCS Medical Spa can offer you a skin analysis at our Seguin office to see if you qualify for intense pulsed light therapy (IPL). An IPL photofacial is a skin rejuvenation treatment for adult men and women with hyperpigmentation and wrinkle issues on their face and neck. IPL is a non invasive procedure and can be very effective and produce great results. Our licensed Aestheticians use IPL to heat the skin just enough to ignite the natural regeneration process and boost collagen production. Over time, you should see a healthier layer with a more even tone and less dark spots. If you live in San Antonio, San Marcos, New Braunfels, Austin, or Houston, call our MedSpa today to learn how an IPL photofacial can help you.

Ideal Candidates

IPL works deep within the layers of your skin to improve many complexion concerns (especially sun spots and brown lesions) with little or no downtime. Candidates for IPL at LCS Medical Spa may have a combination of concerns with their skin, including sun damage, rosacea, hyperpigmentation (brown spots), wrinkles, rough texture, large pores, flushing, freckles, melasma, age and sun spots, or broken capillaries. Dr. Carreon will assess your skin to see if you are a candidate for IPL at your private consultation.

Procedure Technique

IPL is performed inside our Seguin, TX  officenear New Braunfels, San Marcos, San Antonio and Austin TX, in about 20 – 30 minutes in our minor procedure room if performed alone. To start the photofacial, our Aestheticiqns will clean and dry the skin to be treated before covering your eyes with special laser glasses. A cooling gel is then applied to the target area and the IPL is administered using a handheld device that passes over the skin while emitting pulses of laser energy (very specific wavelengths of light), some patients will feel some discomfort during the IPL, it is generally tolerable for the short treatment time.

What to Expect

There is no downtime associated with a photofacial treatment, but you will leave your appointment with your skin a little inflamed and red. This will decrease on its own as the day continues — it can be concealed with makeup if you want. LCS Medical Spa advises patients keep an ointment on the skin's surface to decrease irritation and speed healing. It also helps to take an anti-inflammatory medication to ease swelling. Over the course of several days, the sun damage and other irregularities that rested under the skin will come to the surface and then begin to flake off. It's critical to keep your skin protected from the sun at all times after a photofacial treatment and to not pick at your skin. While you should see some visible results after the first session, your skin will attain the best results after several IPL sessions. Dr. Carreon recommends approximately 4 – 6 treatments performed about once a month at LCS Medical Spa.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost?
Every patient case is unique, which means the cost of IPL will be dependent on your unique condition. Our practice offers monthly specials and accepts many forms of payment. During your initial visit, we can help estimate your cost and determine the number of treatments needed for optimal results, monthly specials are also given.

Quick results?
Improvements can be seen after each treatment, but the best results can be seen a month after a full series of treatments is completed. It’s common for patients to respond differently to each treatment session. Patients will see a gradual improvement of redness, blotchiness, sunspots, and age spots over time.

Side effects?
Most patients experience mild side effects like temporary swelling, redness, crusting, bruising, or superficial blisters. These subside within a day or two after the procedure.

Do I need to prep for IPL?
Patients about to undergo an IPL laser treatment are usually asked to avoid self-tanners and excessive sun for 2 – 4 weeks prior to the procedure. They should discontinue the use of minocycline, tetracycline, doxycycline or Retin-A/Renova several days before each treatment, and may be asked to take aspirin or ibuprofen a week before the procedure to help prevent bruising. Patients should also protect the treated areas with sunscreen between sessions.

Sun sensitivity?
Patients will not be sun sensitive, but they should keep in mind that excessive sun exposure will affect the results of the procedure. Patients should always wear sunscreen to protect their skin, and decrease the appearance of redness, brown spots, wrinkles and skin cancer.

Why so many sessions?
A full series of IPL Photo Rejuvenation sessions are required in order to provide gradual, natural-looking improvement with little to no risk of the patient’s safety. Multiple sessions also allow for longer-lasting results.
