Take a deep breath and get ready to enjoy a whole new you
Now that you’ve decided to move forward with a liposuction procedure there are some housekeeping items you need to do in order to help you prepare, both physically and mentally. A liposuction surgery isn’t something you approach lightly. It’s obvious that a lot of thought and careful consideration has gone into your decision and at LCS Medical Spa under Dr. Melanie Carreon in Seguin, TX, we like to help prepare patients so they can get the most out of their surgery.
Men and women throughout Seguin, New Braunfels, San Antonio, Houston and Austin, TX can prepare and be ready to have a successful recovery after liposuction with these helpful tips:
Select the right doctor for your procedure
By now you’ve met with numerous doctors and selected the one that you feel most comfortable with. It’s good idea to go over important questions with your surgeon such as asking if they’re board certified, how long they’ve been practicing, and how long they’ve been performing liposuction surgeries. You’ll want to find someone who is well-experienced in their field and that requires both experience and time. Skill and reputation matters when choosing your liposuction surgeon so that you get possibly smoother results that are even and natural-looking.
Set expectations and know what you signed up for
A liposuction surgery, like any surgery, is going to have some discomfort associated with it. While it won’t be unbearable, just know that you will need a few days to recover and get back to feeling normal. During your post-operative process, you should be given a clear list of recovery do’s and don’ts so that you can have a positive and healthy post-op experience.
Change your lifestyle before the surgery
If you’re not at your ideal weight or if you’re a cigarette smoker then it’s time to make some serious changes prior to your surgery. Losing weight can help with how your body heals. In addition, liposuction is not an ideal treatment for patients who are using it as a method for weight loss. It is for those who are close to a healthy weight who are still struggling with some aspect of their body where fat is resistant to diet and exercise. If you smoke, quit before surgery. You don’t want to be out of breath when attempting to get up and in motion following your procedure. Cigarette smoking affects how blood clots during the surgery and how your body heals after the surgery. The time to quit smoking is prior to your procedure so you can give your body its best chance at recovery.
Prepare your life and your home
Knowing that you have an upcoming surgery now is the time to get your life in order. Make sure you’ve requested some time off at work in order to allow for recovery and stock up on anything you may need immediately following the surgery. You probably won’t be interested in cooking once you’ve returned home from surgery, so having some quick, easy meals at home is a convenient option.
Get pain medication filled prior to surgery
As mentioned previously, you can expect some discomfort following the procedure. While not everyone will need help, some may need a short prescription of pain medication to help reduce discomfort in the first few days. If your tolerance to pain is low, it may be a good idea to already have this medication filled prior to the surgery. The last thing you want to do is have to wait for it to be filled by the pharmacy when you’re feeling uncomfortable and needing the medication now.
Have a friend or family member on standby
Ask a good friend or family member if they can drive you home following the procedure. It’s also good to have them around the house the first day in case you may need anything. If you’re in luck, they may also make dinner or perform a grocery run for you.
Follow recovery instructions
Some procedures require you to perform stretches or lay a certain way to help aid in recovery. It’s important to follow these instructions to help speed along your recovery time. These instructions aren’t provided as suggestions or optional activities; they are given because they’ve been proven to be effective with recovery.
Accept that there will be bruising and swelling
Although it may be alarming at first, bruising and swelling is expected and is normal following a liposuction procedure. The bruising and swelling typically subside in the first few months following the surgery and then you’ll be able to enjoy the full benefits of your procedure.
Wear the compression garments that were provided
Compression garments definitely won’t be winning any fashion awards anytime soon, however they are provided to help speed along recovery. Even though they aren’t the most comfortable they help minimize the swelling and help with the healing process. It’s recommended that patients wear the compression garments for the first few weeks following the procedure, and only remove them to shower.
Don’t skip out on the post-op checkups
Post-operative check ups allow your surgeon to see how you’re progressing and if you’re healing properly. You can also get a peek at your results when the surgeon is removing bandages and checking on the incisions. It’s important that you come to these checkups because your surgeon will also be able to tell you if there’s anything concerning, like an infection that needs to be addressed and treated.
Remember your medication
It’s always better to take your medication on time and stay ahead of the pain instead of skipping a few doses and trying to play catch up. If you follow the instructions on the prescription you should be able to rest comfortably.
Contact your surgeon with questions or concerns
If you have any questions or issues you can always contact your surgeon for assistance. You can discuss your concerns with the staff and see if they can resolve the issue over the phone, or if it’s better for you to come into the office.
Continue your healthy lifestyle after the surgery
A liposuction surgery can provide you with the body you’ve always wanted. Eating well, exercising, and living a healthy lifestyle will help with how your body responds to the changes. Take care of your body and you’ll be able to enjoy the results for years to come.
