About Laser Tattoo Removal

There may be many reasons why you no longer want a tattoo. Maybe it represents a painful memory. Maybe it has faded over time or simply no longer represents who you are. Whatever the reason, advances in tattoo removal technology have made it possible to lighten and potentially remove the undesired tattoo altogether. At LCS Medical Spa in Seguin, TX, medical director Dr. Melanie Carreon performs tattoo removal with a sophisticated Astanza laser system. This laser energy device is known to yield better results than other old technology tattoo removal systems and may require fewer treatments. Our MedSpa location also allows us to conveniently serve the surrounding communities of San Antonio, San Marcos, New Braunfels, Houston, and Austin, TX for over 14 years!

Ideal Candidates

There are several factors which may increase the success of your laser tattoo removal. Good candidates for this procedure:

  • Have strong immune systems. A strong immune system helps the body’s ability to dispose of the broken down ink properties.
  • Are in good overall health. Not smoking and eating a well-balanced diet aid the body’s immune system in functioning at full capacity.
  • Have strong contrast between the color of the ink and the pigment of the skin. Greater contrasts yield greater results.
  • Have tattoos that are several years old. Older tattoos have a tendency to respond better to laser removal treatment.

Procedure Technique

Once Dr. Carreon decides that your skin is ideal for laser tattoo removal, the treatment area will be prepped with a thorough cleansing and an application of a numbing cream if needed. Dr. Carreon will then pass the handpiece over the surface of the skin as it emits pulsing laser light and energy. The treatment time can vary depending on the size and type of the tattoo. In some situations, the tattoo will require a number of treatments before noticeable results can be seen. This will all be discussed with you during your consultation.

What to Expect

After each treatment, an ointment will be applied to the skin along with bandages to keep the area protected. You should not be alarmed by swelling, redness, and sensitivity, as it is similar to the discomfort associated with receiving a tattoo. You may also feel a sunburned sensation followed by a slight scabbing. It is important to follow aftercare instructions precisely to expedite the healing process. After the site has completed healing, your next treatment session can be scheduled. Sessions typically will not be scheduled less than 2 – 4 weeks of each other.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost?
The cost of your tattoo removal will depend on the number of treatments needed and areas being addressed. Each patient case is unique and some patients require more sessions, while others may only need a few. During your private consultation, we can discuss the estimated cost of your treatment and help you find low-interest medical financing to make your care more affordable.

Any side effects?
Some patients experience redness, swelling, tenderness, crusting, sunburn sensation, or itching immediately after their treatment. Dr. Carreon will discuss your treatment plan, and explain what can be expected from your procedure.

Why so many sessions?
Size, color, location, and the age of the tattoo determine the number of treatments necessary to effectively remove the tattoo. During your consultation, the treatment regimen will be reviewed and any questions regarding the number of estimated sessions will be provided at that time.

When will I see results?
The results and appearance of the tattoo vary from patient to patient. After each treatment session, you will see the tattoo become lighter. Due to the various types of inks used in tattooing, the results and the number of treatments may vary. Typically, multiple treatments will be required and are scheduled 2 – 4 weeks apart.

Other options?
Laser tattoo removal is the safest and quickest option to keep your skin intact and to effectively diminish the appearance of body art. In some cases, dermabrasion or microneedling may also be used as part of your treatment plan to aid in the removal process and to help maintain the health of your skin.
