If you’re interested in removing fat, but don’t want to deal with the hassle of a long recovery time and potential larger scarring that may be associated with traditional liposuction then you may be an excellent candidate for SmartLipo. This innovative provides similar results to traditional liposuction under general anesthesia, minus the downtime. Dr. Melanie Carreon with LCS Medical Spa in Seguin, Texas, has been using this technique on patients since July 2007, and patients are thrilled with their slimmer, more defined physiques.
What is SmartLipo?
SmartLipo is an FDA approved, minimally invasive procedure that uses a laser to strategically diminish and melt fat. The triple-wave laser delivers thermal energy directly to the fat cells and targets and shrinks the cells so they’re easier to suction out of the body. As an added bonus, using laser heat to remove the fat increases collagen production, which leaves the skin tighter and firmer.
How does it work?
The procedure is performed under local anesthesia and takes anywhere from 1.5 to 4 hours depending on the areas treated and the size of the areas. A small incision is made and then a handheld laser is passed back and forth under the skin to target and destroy the fat cells. The heat from the laser will cause the fat cells to swell and liquefy. A cannula is then used to remove the liquefied fat cells. Most patients can return to their normal routines within a few days, but should limit any strenuous activities for 1-2 weeks following the procedure. You’ll be able to possibly show off your new, slimmer physique about a week after the procedure.
How is it different from traditional liposuction?
Both traditional liposuction and SmartLipo require an incision and the use of a cannula, also known as a fat suctioning power assisted liposuction (PAL) device. Since SmartLipo also incorporates a laser to breakdown the fat, the size of the incision and the cannula are much smaller when compared to traditional liposuction. Dr. Carreon places the incisions in discreet areas and since they are so small they’re barely noticeable. The recovery time from SmartLipo is also much quicker due to the size of the incisions and the method involved in removing the fat. The laser heat from SmartLipo will stimulate collagen production and firm and tighten the skin which is not something you can expect from traditional liposuction. For this reason, patients who have diminished skin elasticity are likely to see better results with a SmartLipo procedure.
Am I a good candidate?
An ideal candidate for SmartLipo is someone within their ideal body weight and who has stubborn fat pockets that do not improve with diet and exercise alone. Seguin, San Antonio, Austin, Houston, TX men and women who are desiring larger amounts of fat to be removed may or also possibly be candidates for SmartLipo liposuction. Potential patients should be in good overall health, be within 25 pounds or more of their ideal body weight, and have realistic expectations with the procedure and the outcome. Love handles, flabby upper arm, excess neck or facial fat, or fat around the lower torso are all common problem areas that respond well to SmartLipo. Dr. Carreon will discuss your medical history along with current medications during your initial consultation and determines if you’re a candidate.
What’s recovery like?
During the actual procedure, you will experience minimal discomfort due to the anesthesia, pain tolerance from patient to patient. Afterwards, you can expect to have some aches, which can be compared to a strenuous workout. Depending on the areas treated, your doctor may recommend you wear a compression garment which will help aid in recovery and expedite the healing process. Patients have reported light bruising following the procedure and this is completely normal and will resolve within a few days. You’ll also be able to resume normal activities within a few days. You can enjoy the results in about a week, and expect to see continued improvement over the next three to six months.
How much does it cost?
SmartLipo starts at $995 (price vary and changes every month) and can increase based on the number and size of areas that need to undergo liposuction, along with the size of each area. Since SmartLipo is considered a cosmetic procedure, your insurance will not provide coverage. During a consultation, we will go over the expected cost with you and go over any current specials or promotions that are available.
